Adobe Photoshop Workstation Guide: Performance & Recommendations

Create at the speed of imagination. Optimized Photoshop Workstations: System Requirements & Performance Benchmarks

Like most software developers, Adobe provides a list of system requirements for Photoshop to help ensure hardware compatibility. However, these lists often cover only the bare minimum needed to run the software—not the ideal specs for top-tier performance. In some cases, they may also be outdated or feature suboptimal hardware recommendations.

At Workstation PC, we take a data-driven approach, running extensive Photoshop hardware benchmarks to ensure our systems are perfectly optimized for creative professionals. Instead of guessing, you can explore our in-depth testing and see exactly which components deliver the best performance for your workflow.

Choosing the Right Hardware for Photoshop

Processor (CPU)

The CPU is the backbone of any Photoshop workstation. While GPU acceleration is growing, your choice of processor remains the most significant factor in overall performance. However, more expensive or higher-core-count CPUs aren’t always better—Photoshop primarily benefits from high clock speeds and optimized core usage, rather than sheer core count.

What’s the Best CPU for Photoshop?

Currently, AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X is the top performer, leading both the Ryzen 9000 series and Intel Core Ultra processors in our Photoshop benchmarks. Even CPUs with higher core counts from the same generation don’t outperform it. If you prefer Intel, the Core Ultra 9 285K is the best alternative, but it’s about 15% slower than the Ryzen 7 9700X while being more expensive.

Does Photoshop Benefit from More Cores?

Adobe has made improvements in multi-core utilization, but beyond 8 cores, additional cores provide only marginal benefits. CPU architecture and clock speed are far more important for performance.

Intel vs. AMD: Which Performs Better in Photoshop?

Right now, AMD holds a slight lead over Intel, but this can shift as new CPUs are released.

Does Photoshop Run Well on Dual Xeon or EPYC Workstations?

No. Since Photoshop doesn’t fully utilize high-core-count CPUs, dual-processor setups actually perform worse. These workstation-class CPUs tend to have lower clock speeds and additional overhead from multiple physical processors, leading to diminished performance.
